Turmeric Anthotype Demonstration - Resident Artist Jess Fleming

  • Photosynthesis 6 Battersea Street Christchurch, Canterbury Region, 8023 New Zealand (map)

Over her 2026 artist residency, Jess Fleming has explored the use of chemicals derived from natural sources (gorse flowers, parsley, thyme, and more) for developing film and to create light-sensitive dyes for printing.

Join us in this session where Jess demonstrates the process of creating anthotypes using turmeric.

  • extraction of curcumin, the light-sensitive dye

  • preparation paper with the dye for UV exposure

  • exposure using the sun to create the print

  • washing of the print to create a permanent image

  • toning of the print with plants

Take a step into the experimental photographic world of plant-based emulsions, get a taste for using the sun to create imagery, and be inspired to make your own.

Participants in this demonstration will leave with paper they have coated with turmeric emulsion themselves, a short reference guide, and knowledge to try it themselves. Just bring something dark to put your paper in!

1 hour demonstrations starting at 12pm and 1pm

$5 per person / materials included / limit 12 people per session
